| PROGRAM #1: TURTLES |
 |
An interactive presentation
on turtles based on our book, Turtles (Franklin
Watts), for ages 8 through 12.
Each 30- to 45-minute
presentation is an entertaining and informative
look at these well-loved creatures that have been
around since the time of the dinosaurs. We show
slides and talk about: |
| • |
How and
why turtles have survived for over 200 million
years. |
| • |
Turtle or tortoise:
What's the difference? |
| • |
Unusual turtle species — the
South American mata mata turtle whose head
is shaped like a leaf; the leatherback sea
turtle that can grow to 7 feet long on a diet
of jellyfish; the diamondback terrapin, a turtle
that thrives in local marshes and once graced
the tables (in the form of soup) of the New
York elite. |
| • |
A look at some of the
world's most endangered turtles. |
| • |
Ways kids can help turtles.
We bring along live turtles and turtle shells.
At presentations for younger children, we have
them create their own turtle out of paper and
scotch tape. Kids are galvanized by seeing
the live animals and the hands-on project.
They leave excited and wanting to know more
about these familiar yet unusual reptiles. |
For Schools: We are happy to provide
you with a take-home letter for students to give
to parents a few days before our visit. The letter
informs parents that they may purchase autographed
copies of our book for their children. There is,
however, no obligation for the school or parents
to purchase books. We'll bring the books with us
the day of the presentation.
“
It’s important for children to see people in the real world who are
involved in science in other than predictable ways.…The class loved
seeing your excitement about the turtles and the natural sciences.”
—
Sharon Lasher, Glenwood Elementary, Short Hills, New Jersey

| PROGRAM #2: CONFESSIONS
OF A TURTLE WIFE |
 |
A 45–60 minute reading
and presentation by Anita Salzberg from her book,
Confessions of a Turtle Wife, about living with a
turtle fanatic. http://www.turtlewife.com/
|
Enjoy a laugh-packed look at a turtle-challenged
relationship. Hear about escapades ranging from
finding turtles on every vacation, to doctoring
sick turtles, to
dealing with a snapping turtle in the bathtub, and trying not to trip over the
tortoise and the box turtle that roam around the house. Anita's slide show of
various turtle species (and of the people who love them) is an eye-opening part
of her presentation. She offers her take on the best ways to get along with a
significant other who is significantly involved with a hobby — anything
from baseball to bungee jumping.
" On behalf of the Reference and Adult Services Division of the Nassau County
Library Association, I want to thank you for the wonderful program you presented
at our Annual Breakfast….The slides and live turtles made your presentation
more educational and enjoyable than we had ever hoped….Our division has
not had such enthusiastic response to the Annual Breakfast in years!"
— E.
Marie Doran, Secretary, RASD/NCLA |
" It was a lot of fun being
taken into your
turtle world."
— Margaret Stetler, Bayside, New York
